Support for the implementation of an Environmental Management System for Italian State Railways Group

Brief

Provide support for the implementation and maintenance of an Environmental Management System for a number of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group companies

Project challenge

To design and implement the Environmental Management System, with acquisition of ISO 14001 certification for a number of group companies, also disseminating the culture of environmental sustainability among the companies’ staff.

Solution

provide support to the companies of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group to achieve:

  • harmonisation of policies and the system of environmental rules of each individual company with FS Group-level corporate processes and organisation framework;
  • consistency with the Governance Model defined by the Parent Company FSI;
  • implementation and maintenance of a certified environmental management system in the main “Grandi Stazioni Rail” (GSR) stations. These included Roma Termini, Milano Centrale, Venezia S. Lucia, Venezia Mestre, Verona Porta Nuova, Torino Porta Nuova and Napoli Centrale, with the intention of bringing all GSR stations up to certification.

Execution phases

FASE 1

Design and definition of the Environmental Management System documentation in accordance with the Directives defined by the Parent Company (Governance Model defined by the Parent Company FSI) and existing environmental practices, starting from the state of the art through document review and targeted interviews with company representatives;

FASE 2

Ongoing technical, operational and legal support;

 

FASE 3

Support in the implementation and application of the EMS through the definition of environmental objectives, the identification of specific KPIs and performance monitoring, support for the definition of new operating methods, and verification of compliance with the guidelines defined by the Parent Company through cross-functional audits

FASE 4

Training by means of specific sessions and coaching of company staff;

FASE 5

Internal audits to verify fulfilment of all compliance obligations, application of the Environmental Management System and System compliance with the ISO 14001:2015 standard;

FASE 6

Second-party audit activities performed to minimise the risks associated with contracted activities and to ensure compliance and process improvement. these activities included verification of quality standards, detection of the status of the service/activity offered in accordance with contractual requirements, and identification of areas for improvement;

FASE 7

Support and guidance in resolving issues raised during audits;

FASE 8

Support in obtaining/maintaining the ISO 14001:2015 certification.

Achieved results

The design, implementation and development of the Environmental Management System was completed, and the ISO 14001:2015 environmental certification has been acquired and maintained for a number of Italian State Railways Group companies.
