Digitalization and Configuration of System Data for Railway Signaling

We support the digitalization of system data configuration and validation processes for railway signaling, guiding the transition from analog and fragmented procedures to structured, consistent, and verifiable digital models. We operate in ERTMS contexts and high-criticality signaling applications, where the correctness of configuration data is a determining factor in achieving the required safety levels (up to SIL4).

The approach is based on digital modeling of installations and equipment, starting from schematic plans and integrating signaling layouts, functional logics, and interface data structures. The result is a complete and coherent numerical representation of the real system, from which unique installation data are generated to describe field configurations, functional logics, communication parameters, and data exchange buffers. This reduces the risk of human error and enables automatic validation throughout the process.

NIER designs and develops high-class (T3) software tools to support the generation, verification, simulation, and deployment of system data, integrating railway domain expertise with safety-critical software engineering. Depending on the project context, we also work on the integration and use of third-party tools, ensuring methodological consistency, process control, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Solutions include assisted configuration environments, multi-level validation, and controlled commissioning mechanisms, ensuring traceability, consistency, and data governance throughout the entire lifecycle of the installation.

The digitalization of signaling layouts and logics also enables the creation of consistent, reusable, and integrable installation databases, laying the foundations for advanced and scalable management of network information in support of infrastructure modernization and new operational scenarios in the railway system.
