NIER has an significant history of supporting national and international research centres and laboratories, through studies and applications aimed at analysing and containing the risk of experiments and plants, managing health and safety at work and containing their impact on the environment, to enable identification of more reliable choices.

NIER is itself a recognised research laboratory, and is equipped with a Research and Innovation department.
