Energy audit in the tertiary sector – Large Retail Distribution (In Italian GDO)

SERVICE MERCATO CLIENT Primaria azienda della Grande Distribuzione Organizzata YEAR 2016

Brief

Fulfil the energy audit obligation required by Italian Legislative Decree 102/2014 for large and energy-intensive companies by implementing an ISO 50001 certified Energy Management System.

Project challenge

to set up an easily updatable energy audit model that can be replicated at all points of sale within the scope of the company’s Energy Management System, while ensuring that the information corresponds to the actual status of the sites and complies with existing statutory obligations.

Solution

a “flexible” auditing template was defined, i.e. a standard descriptive core document plus a series of technical annexes containing 1) description of plant consistency, 2) energy balances and 3) intervention sheets. This framework enabled the client to independently update the audit in case of changes to an outlet’s energy system.

Execution phases

FASE 1

Kick-off meeting to discuss the client’s needs in terms of compliance with legislative requirements (Italian Legislative Decree 102/2014) and integration within the ISO 50001 Energy Management System.

FASE 2

Selection of 3 pilot sites in which to set up the energy audit model.

FASE 3

Data collection relating to:

  • characteristics of energy-intensive plant/equipment;
  • description of company energy flows;
  • monthly consumption of electricity and methane gas for the previous three years (billing data and measurements from existing monitoring systems);
  • monthly energy production from renewable sources.
FASE 4

Detailed technical inspections to survey the existing installations by means of a census of the individual electrical and thermal users.

FASE 5

Electrical and thermal modelling of each site and calibration of the models on the basis of actual consumption data to identify the most significant energy-intensive areas.

FASE 6

Calculation of the energy performance indicators envisaged by the company Energy Management System.

FASE 7

Development of the “flexible” audit framework (standard descriptive core documnent plus 3 technical annexes).

FASE 8

Drafting of energy audit reports, with identification and filing of possible energy efficiency interventions and their feasibility.

Achieved results

a systematic process for the energy analysis of points of sale was defined that is easily updated by Energy Management technicians and/or internal maintenance managers. It was integrated into the Energy Management System procedures.
