Management and Verification of Requirements for the ITER project

SERVICE MARKET CLIENT ITER Organization YEAR 2015 - 2019 in progress

Brief

Support Requirements Management & Verification (RMV) work at subsystem and component level for the Electron Cyclotron Upper Launcher subsystem within the ITER nuclear fusion reactor project, using the IBM-DOORS tool.

Project challenge

  • Complexity and multidisciplinary nature of the ITER project, which require specific and advanced skills.
  • International context and number of stakeholders (Fusion For Energy, ITER Organisation, European research laboratories).
  • Centralised management of the requirements database, integrating the contribution of stakeholders
  • Extensive use of the IBM-DOORS tool.

Solution

NIER provided ongoing support for the application of the RMV process to the EC Upper Launcher subsystem, operating as a single interface for the client (Fusion For Energy, ITER Organization) on behalf of various design teams.

NIER provided support and training in the use of the IBM-DOORS tool to the various design teams involved in the project.

NIER has provided support in the Requirements Management & Verification (RMV) tasks applicable to the subsystem and its components, using the IBM-DOORS tool, in accordance with the RMV process defined by the client.

NIER carried out the top-down propagation of the requirements (from the ITER project to the components of the EC Upper Launcher subsystem) and compiled the specifications and indications provided (bottom-up) by the various design teams.

Execution phases

FASE 1

Definition of project requirement applicability at sub-system level;

FASE 2

Propagation of the applicable requirements from the project specifications to those of the sub-system;

FASE 3

Elicitation of requirements through interaction with design teams (bottom-up approach) and integration into sub-system specifications;

FASE 4

Generation of subsystem specifications;

FASE 5

Generation of the project-subsystem propagation matrix (RPM);

FASE 6

Generation of component specifications and subsystem-component propagation matrices (RPMs) by adopting an approach similar to the above;

FASE 7

Generation of the Verification Plan for subsystem and components;

FASE 8

Generation of the Verification Control Document (i.e. verification matrices) for subsystem and components.

Achieved results

The work was performed using IBM-DOORS.
